Alta Utah is for skiers - no snowboards allowed
I don't make the rules. Alta is one of the last ski resorts not to allow snowboarders.
I'm sure they have their reasons.
All I know or care about is the powder. Powder so deep
Powder so light
powder so sweet
powder so quiet
You can't hear anything at Alta on a powder day - except one thing..
Screams of joy from a skier going down an untracked powder run and floating, falling, flying, soaring down the mountain.
Up top are Stein, Dave, Brian hiking up to Eddies Nowwhere to ski down the backside.
Then we have the three of them coming thru a few feet of fluff - and I guarantee they are focused, in the moment, happy as clams, happy to be alive.
Finally two black and whites of the Wildcat lift and area.
The Wildcat lift used to be the main lift to get on the mountain. It's still there but hardly used much now since a New Collins lift was installed.
But Wildcat is full of amazing double black diamond gulleys, chutes, bumps, trees, fun.
It's also where I paid my dues. Skied scared for four years till I got good enough to "hang" with the boys.
And it's where we still start off most powder days. We've named the runs we've created. We'll start with a Roth's run and follow it with a modified Roth or a Stein or a Phil's run. No one really knows where Phil's run is - it's never really the same twice. One day I'll figure that out. Guessing it'll take bunch more trips and a bunch more powder.
